My Journey
Way back in Ms. Hohl’s fifth-grade class, during creative hour, I discovered the ease and joy of written expression.
After my children were born, I began writing personal essays and articles for The Mothers of Multiples and The Montessori News. Before returning to full-time teaching, I took on the role of assistant editor for Hudson Valley Parent.
For twenty-five years, I dedicated my heart and energy to teaching special education students in public schools, always remaining connected to a writing group and keeping a notebook within arm's reach. During this time, I had the privilege of attending workshops with Ulster County Poet Laureate Kate Hymes. In the cozy living room of her New Paltz home, surrounded by fellow writers, my passion for writing—which had started way back in grade school—was reignited.
Eventually, I found my way to the Writing Institute and began taking evening classes. In 2020, I made a pivotal decision to return to college, earning an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College.
I recently came across a quote by Gloria Steinem:
“Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don’t feel like I should be doing something else.”
That sentiment perfectly captures where I am in my life now; it’s the act of writing and refining my work each day that keeps me going.
